Reviewing Products on your Blog

make money bloggingYou do not have to “monetize” your blog with only money. You can also earn products by doing reviews. A review is when a company sends you a product and you tell your readers about it. Some reviews also include a giveaway for your readers.

Ever see a blog that says “PR Welcome”. They are advertising that they like to do product reviews. Representatives can contact them to see if they would like to run a review. Reps will contact you even if you do not have the “PR Welcome” notice so eventually you are going to have to decide if this is something you want to do!

Try not to sell yourself short. If it is something you would like to post then go for it. If you are on the fence about it then make them an offer. The worst thing that will happen is they turn you down (which shouldn’t matter to you if you were on the fence about it in the first place). I very seldom post a review without a giveaway. If there is a product that I like, but does not offer a giveaway then I will ask. Most of the time the rep agrees to add whatever it is I ask for. Occasionally they say no and I then decide if I am going to do it as a plain review or not.

The other way to get review products is to sell yourself and your blog to a company. Find a product you would like to review and contact the company with your offer. Include what you would like to review, why, and the stats of your blog (page and unique views per month, page rank, alexa rank, demographics, etc). We will talk about how you can get those stats next week.

Try not to take it to heart if your offer is rejected. Some offers will work and others will not.

For great information and to find general pitches that you can apply for go to The Product Review Place.

TASK – Decide if you want to have reviews on your blog and set your standards (how many will you do, what sorts of products, how often, any rules that you have). This part is hard! Periodically review it to see if you want to make changes.

Today you can gain an extra entry by leaving a comment pointing out your favorite part of this series so far.

Tomorrow we will discuss attracting traffic to your blog using comments, carnivals, awards, and guest posts.

That one's my fav so far.

How do you get PR agents to find your blog in the first place?

Stumblupon is a great tool to increase traffic!

PR reps are amazing at tracking you down. When I first started getting contacted I really wasn't doing anything special. There a few things you can do to increase your chances of being "found".

First, drop names when you are blogging. If you love Fisher Price then say it. There is a shot that they will see you when they search for their brand name. This one works a lot better when you use twitter (since even small blogs will pop up when you search there vs google).

Be friendly to the blogs in your field. Link to them, talk about them, comment on their blog. If they notice they will start to track you, maybe even link to you, and refer you 🙂 Almost all bloggers will notice unless they are too big to track the smaller mentions or they do not have tracking mechanisms installed (maybe for the newer or small blogs). I have had quite a few PR reps ask for referrals. I refer the people who are about the same size or even much smaller than me. I figure the bigger blogs already have contacts and I know I am not alone in this. I'll have more information about this next week as it also helps other parts of your blog, not just finding PR reps.

Finally, join some review forums like The Product Review Place (I see I missed that link, I will get it fixed when I get home!)

Hi. Every post in this series are really very helpful. I like the most about making pillar content.

By the way, where can I find the link to all the posts in this series? I want to go over them again because we broke our computer in the last 1 1/2 week.

Thanks for these helpful posts again.

Thanks Chin chin. Right now you have to follow the series using the "blogging" category in the left sidebar. At the end of the series I will post a Table of Contents page that will link to all of them and make it much easier though 🙂
