Now that you have actually chosen your platform, domain name, and title you are ready to start posting. For now you can choose a generic template (we will discuss design in the next part) and focus on your pillar content.
Pillar content is the backbone of your blog. You need good, solid articles that show off your talents as a writer, the focus of your blog, and provide a starting point for backlinks and content links within your own blog. The first pillar content I wrote on Little People Wealth was Ten Reasons Why You Aren’t Rich. I started with a series because it gave me topics to continue to expand on. Plus, readers tend to like list and series posts. Pillar content does not have to be a series though. Other examples of pillar content on this blog is my CVS tutorial, Walgreens tutorial, Mystery Shopping tutorial, and Coupon tutorial.
You can see the similarities between those posts. The biggest difference is the size. Generally your pillar content is longer than your normal posts. You can link to pillar content forever, the content never ages (or if it does it can be updated easily). You can also expand on pillar content.
Your daily posts keep people coming to your blog, but your pillar content is what makes them stick around. You are more likely to convert a passer-by into a reader if they go to a pillar post rather than just the homepage.
Think about your topic and start brainstorming pillar topics. These posts will take you longer to write than your normal posts, but they are important. You can post them in between your daily posts and they do not have to go up at once, but make sure you get at least one posted and write down topics as soon as you think of them so you have ideas to go back to when you get the time.
TASK: Write one pillar article and brainstorm ideas for two or three more.
Monday we will discuss setting up a posting schedule.
Make sure you sign up for the series giveaways and today you can gain an extra entry by tweeting “I am learning how to make money blogging! http://su.pr/1DvmDZ @LPWealth”

Great idea! Thanks! I've never heard of this before, but it makes a lot of sense! I've got an idea for a pillar post – going to try to write it this weekend!
You're welcome. Pillar posts are really important in a blog if you want to attract and keep traffic. I can't wait to see your first one – I am always decluttering!
I am loving this series! I've been blogging for about a year but keep learning more every day! Thank you for reminding me to review and update my pillar posts and to make them more prominent!
Thanks Audra and you're welcome 🙂 The way you link within your posts is excellent. Each post I clicked on led to something else. That is a really good way to get people "hooked" and increase your page views.
This is a very good technique for thinking up posts idea. Thanks for sharing these tips. I also have to learn to linking up posts more. This pillar content and linking technique will help attract more visitors to our blogs.
You're welcome, pillar posts are very important when it comes to growing your blog.
Thank you for this post! I think I shall do a pillar about how I save money on everyday things. =)
(My blog sort of focuses on the different aspects of a stay-at-home-mom rather than just one topic. My 3 main focuses, however, are cooking (mainly in the crockpot), saving money, and cloth diapering. I’m going to also try to become more green and blog about that.
I love it! Email me your posts as you finish them. Crockpot cooking is my absolute favorite and I cloth diaper both of my kiddos 🙂
