175 Great Games and a Giveaway!

I recently reviewed the book Great Games! 175 Games & Activities for Families, Groups, and Children by Matthew Toone. I was pretty excited to get this book especially since one of the main points was that these games were “no cost, low prep (with simple things from around the house, you’ll be having fun in no time!)”

The author, Matthew Toone, grew up in a family of eight children. That sounds like my family! I am the oldest of ten. Our family played (and still plays) many games as well. I grew up knowing that playing games is a great way to have fun, spend time with, and learn about your family. As I got older I realized that not only do games provide those wonderful benefits, but they are also low cost. I would often run into the store and purchase a new game instead of going to a movie.

This book is much better than picking up a game at the store. These games that Matthew Toone has developed are very low cost if not free! Most of the items can be found in your home. There are many games that require nothing, some require a deck of cards, I saw at least one that required snow, and a few require some odds and ends (like a shoe from each player, or a ball and sidewalk chalk). All of them are low cost.

The index splits the games into Indoor games (acting/drawing, brain teaser/discovery, card, guessing, funny, intellectual/educational, team races/relays, trivia, and words/vocabulary games), outdoor games (backyard/BBQ/park, church/youth group, funny, gym, night, relays/team race, sports/athletic, summer/winter, team building/leadership), and children’s games (card, educational/mind, guessing, indoor/quiet, outdoor/active, road trip/car, sidewalk, and words/numbers.

Great Games sells for $25.95, but right now you can purchase it for $15.95 ($19.06 after shipping). I strongly recommend this book. Use it for a family night, a date night, a friend night. I think it would make a great gift as well. It is a book that not only saves money, but it also brings people closer together.

GIVEAWAY!!!

One lucky reader is going to win a copy of this book! I thought of a few ways to do this giveaway and review and since it is for a game book I wanted it to be fun! Plus, there isn’t enough room in a post to tell you about all the wonderful things in this book. So, here is how you can enter this giveaway:

  • First, head over to Great Games and find which game looks the most interesting to you. If you click on “view book” then you will see some pictures. Pictures #2-#7 are of the index. Find the title of a game that you would like to know more about and leave it as a comment! Make sure you do this entry first!
  • Of course, if you are a subscriber to Little People Wealth (RSS or Email) then you always get an extra entry! Just leave a comment saying that you subscribe.
  • If you are a follower of Little People Wealth then you will also get an extra entry
  • If you promote this post/giveaway then you will get an extra entry (email, blog post, forum posting, twitter, facebook – just let me know what you did!)

Now for the fun extra entries. I will be choosing one of the games that you would like to know more about and letting you know how to play it! I will do this 4 times over the course of the week. Each time I do every single person who leaves a comment on the post will get an extra entry! That means that you can get up to 8 entries for this book. Believe me, you won’t be disappointed 🙂

And now for the technical stuff… The winner will be chosen using the comment number and random.org on Tuesday Sep 29th. The winner will have 48 hours to contact me with their information and claim their prize.

I want information on ALL of them. As a Rec Therapist, I could really use this book! In particular, I love the acting games. I used to play "mafia" but don't remember how, so I'd enjoy re-learning to play this game. 🙂

I always take a variety of ideas from books when we go on a long car trip or out to eat. We love educational games, games about "did you know?" like history questions, things about presidents or the states, etc. So, based on our family interests, I would be interested right away in the Brain Teaser and Discovery Games, the Funny Games, drawing games, intellectual and educational games and words and vocab. games
I'm going to ask my library to get this book – it's right up my alley

A lot of these games sound kind of like things we did as kids (long ago!!) It would be awesome to learn the details behind them and find out how they differ from what I remember! I think the one I am most interested in is Fo' Shizzle My Nizzle. It sounds hilarious.

Thanks!!
