Memorial Day travel is supposed to rebound, according to AAA, because of discount hotels and lower gas prices! The average gas price was $3.15 last year at this time (now it is $2.24).
If you are traveling over Memorial Day (or if you want to) there are a few things that can help you find a great deal!
First, travel with your own food. Going to the grocery store and loading up on items for a cooler and non-perishables can save a lot of money on restaurants.
Next, use a combination of websites to find a great price on your hotel and/or airfare. I like Sidestep. It searches all of the major travel search engines at once so I hardly ever can find a lower price. Once you find that low price you can do two things to see if you can get it lower.
- You can go directly to the website of the hotel/air that you found the lowest price for. I found that occasionally they will beat the price that they submitted to the travel sites with their own coupon code or deal.
- Also, you can take that price to Priceline to name your own price (shave 10-15% off what you found as the lowest cost and see if anybody bites!). Keep in mind that if you use priceline then you have to be more flexible about when you fly and where you stay.
