Seven Organic Food Tips - Reader Questions

It's time for another reader question! This one is from Lee Ann. She asks
I would love to know how to get good deals on organic food. It seems so much more expensive. Is this something that can be done on a budget?
You can absolutely eat organic on a budget!

Here are seven tips to help you save on organics:
  • Costco Costco Costco! They carry lots of organic foods at bulk prices. We get our organic spinach, green beans, jellies, and lots of other products from here at bulk rate prices.
  • Organic Coupons! There are quite a few organic coupons out there, but you have to know where to look. Check out my Coupons 101 page to see 6 different links to printable organic coupon sites. Coupons.com even has organic coupons on occasion (this month they have a $1 off Health Valley Organics). When I find an organic coupon I print it out even if I don't plan on using it at the time. That way it is there if I need it.
  • Amazon! Believe it or not, Amazon sells quite a bit of organic food at bulk discount rates. Combine these deals with coupons and you will really see the savings. There are six organic food deals at Amazon this month!
  • Price watch any organic store like you would a "regular" grocery store. In my area we have a little organic store called Nature's Pantry. They are higher priced than Whole Foods, but I still use them to get a good deal. Every month they send out their sales circular and I match and post coupons for it. If you are not in the area then the match-up won't benefit you, but you can always use it to see what is out there and look to see if your local organic store carries the same items. The coupons work anywhere!
  • "Regular" coupons. There are not too many regular coupons out there. Occasionally a newspaper will carry them, but most of them are found on the packaging and on hangtags in the aisle's of organic stores. Clip all of these! Put them in a separate place so you know which ones you have. If it is on a hangtag then take one even if you aren't using it that day - you can match it to a sale later. Don't overdue it, everybody would like the opportunity to take one - but saving one for later is perfectly fine.
  • Look locally. Often times local products are organic but not advertised that way. You can get them for a lot cheaper than commercial organic food.
  • Finally, when you see a deal then always check to see if there is an organic option! I recently posted a deal for diapers.com that most would use for huggies or pampers, but they also offer organic baby products. Our "regular" HyVee grocery store now has an organic section. Many places are jumping on the bandwagon, so check to make sure :-)
