Meet Jun-Nicole of HUGS with a Giveaway – It’s WAHM Wednesday!

I was lucky enough to be contacted by Jun-Nicole of HUGS (Help Us Give Slings) recently. Jun-Nicole’s business donates slings to mothers in Indonesia. Here is what she has to say:

On December 26, 2004 my family woke up to the horrifying news of the earthquake in Indonesia and the subsequent tsunami that caused devastation in Southeast Asia. We were particularly shocked since our father lived in Indonesia and we knew that he was on mission on an island as a representative of the United Nations. After contacting his office and obsessively reading the news he finally called to let us know that he was well and getting ready for the massive relief work that his office would be involved in. Since our family had such a convenient connection to Indonesia we thought that there must be something we could do in the aftermath of the tsunami disaster.

Jun-Nicole (a birth doula and mother of 2 sons) had so many interesting things to tell me! She said that she started her program after reading an article about a midwife requesting head coverings after the tsunami so the women could leave their homes and seek help. She said the thought of a piece of cloth making such a profound difference really struck her. At the time she was using a traditional Indonesian sling (selendang) to carry her son and the idea grew from that. Originally her father would purchase slings in Indonesia and ship them back to her, she would sell them and send him the money back. He would use that to purchase more slings to send to her and donate to the local women.

Her business has grown so that now she donates to women who are affected by natural disasters all around the world. She strives to not only donate slings to needy women, but to also to promote the art of babywearing among western parents.

Jun-Nicole said that her only form of advertising is word of mouth and she encourages people to print out her flyers and newsletters and “pay it forward”.
