Making Money Online, Is It Worth It?

making money onlineI like the idea of having back-up ways to earn income. Even though what you earn online may be small, it can make a difference. I find this is especially true with paying down debt. Do you know that if you add $100 a month to your mortgage payment (on a $100,000 mortgage) then you will pay it off 8 years 9 months sooner! That astounds me. I think that I should be able to pull in an extra $100 a month – right?

Starting next year I am going to be keeping track of the extra income I earn online and how much time it takes me to earn it. I will also do a series on the different ways that you can make money. Some of these will be referral based programs, many of them will not be. I find that I make more on non-referral based programs so they are more reliable ways of making extra income.  Here are some of the online money making ways I plan on earning extra income:

Blogging – There are many people who make a lot of extra income doing blogs. I am not there yet (I am still making $0). I enjoy blogging and right now I use my blog as a way to keep track of what I am spending/earning and share my deals with friends and family. I do hope that I can make money with it eventually. I will be researching how to do this and reporting back to you!

Searching/Offers – There are many different ways to make money doing this. The big one right now is Swagbucks (use their search engine and they will give you swagbucks which can be turned in for gift cards). There is also Cashcrate, which gives you credit for doing surveys or filling out forms. There are many more, but I haven’t been too thrilled with any of them. If there is one that you would like me to look at and review then just let me know! If it is a referral one then be sure to leave your link.

Rebates – This is one of my favorites. Sites that give you money for purchasing things you need and they will even let you know what coupons are available. Right now my favorite is Mr. Rebates, but I recently joined Ebates and Cashbaq and I always compare the three before I make a deal.  If you want to read about the differences then head over to my post reviewing the refund sites.

Mystery Shopping
– I love this one. I don’t make much money at it though – mostly just free products. Don’t give anybody money to tell you how to mystery shop, you can get started completely for free.  If you want to know how then start with my mystery shopping tutorial.  It will help you get started.

Ebay – In 2006 my husband and I had a contest to see who could turn $10 into more in one years time using ebay. I won, and I turned that $10 into $950. I must say I was a bit frustrated that I didn’t hit the $1000 mark. There are some tricks to selling on ebay and for the most part it is super easy.  I wrote an Ebay tutorial that can get you started although there were some fee changes on March 30, 2010 that I have not incorporated into the series yet.

Misc – There are other ways I find to earn extra income. The biggest one in this category is bank bonuses. This is a great way to earn something for nothing. There is also saving money that would have been otherwise spent. The most recent item that fits this category is when we switched home insurance. We saved just under $300/year and I count that as “extra” income because it would have been gone if I hadn’t made the phone calls.

I hope you can join me in this 2009 extra income challenge!

I just started blogging about a month ago. I have a few ads set up from Google AdSense and I’ve made about $38 already. I started with just having some family and friends clicking on my blog, but now with some followers, etc. It seems to be getting a little more traffic. I hear you can make quite a bit with AdSense so definitely look into it. You have a great blog!

You can also be an affiliate for coupons.com. I have that on my blog. I also had 2 people (companies) contact me this past friday about doing posts for them and them giving me something in return for the posts not $ per say but coupons for one and a giftcard for the other. I cant wait to see your mystery shopping stuff, I’ve been recently thinking of this for myself 🙂

I’ll have to try the google AdSense – generally I hate the way those ads look on the page though 🙁 And, I use ad blocker with Firefox so I can’t see them when I am online so I never really know what is showing up on my page. My goal was at least averaging 100 people a day before I started advertising (I am now at just over 80).

I love the coupons.com idea! I send people there all the time when I do my grocery lists anyway 🙂 Reviewing sounds like it could be fun too 🙂

You guys have some excellent suggestions, thanks! When I start the series I’ll be sure to link to you 🙂

I like the post. Here is another guy showing us how to make even more online. This guy is showing me the ropes and it hasn’t cost me anything. It is free. Sign up and watch the cool video where he logs into his account and shows us how much he makes.
